Figuring out what to wear for engagement photos can be a real stress point. It’s often the first big question couples ask before their session. Don’t worry! We're here to help you navigate this process with ease and confidence.

Coordinate, don’t match

Matching outfits from head to toe can make your photos look flat and stiff. Instead, let’s focus on coordinating. Choose a shared color palette that reflects your personalities. One of you might wear a solid tone while the other opts for a subtle pattern. This approach will create a more dynamic look that photographs beautifully.

Reach for texture and layers

When it comes to outfits, texture is your friend. A simple outfit with a great texture—like a knit sweater, suede jacket, or linen dress—adds richness to your photos. Layers are also fantastic. They give you more options throughout the session. You can remove a jacket or cardigan for a fresh look without needing a complete outfit change.

Think about your shooting location

The energy of your location matters. A downtown Louisville session feels different than one at a botanical garden or a serene farm. Warmer, richer tones look stunning against greenery and golden light. Conversely, a clean, tailored look works well against brick and architecture. If you know your location, choose outfits that complement the backdrop. Not sure where to start? Choose colors that photograph well

  • Soft neutrals, warm earth tones, and deep jewel tones photograph beautifully in almost any setting.

  • Avoid pure white, which can blow out in bright light, and steer clear of busy logos or graphic prints that distract from your faces.

  • Small pops of color—like a bag, tie, or shoes—work well as accents rather than a full bright outfit.

Comfort is key

Comfort is non-negotiable. Engagement sessions usually last from thirty minutes to an hour, often with some walking involved. Choose shoes you can walk in comfortably. It’s a good idea to try on your full outfit together before the day. This way, you can ensure nothing pinches, rides up, or needs constant adjusting when you’re in front of the camera.

A few things to leave at home

  • Head-to-toe black can photograph a bit heavy in daylight.

  • Neon or highly saturated colors may compete with your surroundings.

  • Brand new shoes that you haven’t broken in yet can lead to discomfort.

Your engagement session, covered

Once you’ve figured out what to wear for engagement photos, the rest of the session will feel easy. Every package with The Jean-Marie Brothers includes a complimentary engagement session.
